Self portait and a green anole with creeping trumpets.

Hi, Kayla Burnam!

Growing up, my favorite pastime was catching lizards, and from an early age I knew I loved both nature and art. As a proud Florida native, I seek to capture creatures great and small, creating work that celebrates the wonder and beauty of creation.

My work is inspired by Florida’s open landscapes, wetlands, and untamed spaces, especially land that echoes the spirit of A Land Remembered. I am drawn to the quiet stories within these environments and the intricate personalities of animals, often focusing on the overlooked and ordinary.

Stylistically, my work is influenced by Baroque and Dutch Golden Age artists who used chiaroscuro to create dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. I use light as both a visual and narrative tool, guiding attention and illuminating moments of stillness and quiet significance in the natural world.

My Process

Oil Painting

My oil paintings begin with a monochromatic underpainting in yellow ochre, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s method, where I carefully establish form, value, and fine detail. This foundational layer allows me to fullycreate the composition of the piece before introducing color. Once dry, I build the painting through glazes of color.

Watercolor mixed media

My watercolor pieces begin with a detailed sketch that establishes the composition and structure of the work. I then layer watercolor to build color and value. Once dry, I add gouache and colored pencil to refine forms, create clean color transitions, and bring out fine details.
